Sketching cars at the amazing Oak Swamp
This week I visit a friend I met through RUclips - the very clever Oak Swamp. I only had an afternoon but I could easily have sketched the many interesting sights for a few days more. His films are terrifically entertaining, packed with not only the vehicle builds but visits to interesting places and people - and some very groovy live music. Definitely take a look. Here's a link...

      I sometimes have to work from photos - but in that case I almost always redraw it from a new angle and possibly add some motion - stuff that isn't in the reference. I wouldn't be happy just producing a sketched copy of the photo. I don't think I've ever added to a sketch I've done from life. I get it to a point I'm happy with and then leave it. I can see how photos would help a lot with moving subjects like animals :)

      @StefanMarjoram День назад

      I'm a bean eating, woke, lefty environmentalist. You're right, there is horrendous inequality - and it sickens me that the billionaires got richer and more numerous during Covid, whilst the rest of us got poorer. But these aren't rich toffs flaunting their super-yachts - they're the enthusiastic engineers that built the cars and spend their lives keeping them going so we can experience what motoring was like over a century ago. Much better than letting them moulder in a museum. Set your sights on those who have more wealth than they could ever need, and yet devote their lives to amassing more, when they could help so many others with it.

      I couldn't tell exactly what the angle is - but I have found it the most pleasant to use. Perhaps the Duke is more like the 40deg model?

      @@TimepassKorner That's great to hear! The best of luck with it. Once you can get your head round drawing simple forms like boxes and cylinders in perspective, then adapting and combining them to make them into a hypercar isn't too big a stretch (though they can be quite a complicated collection of details).

      @@TimepassKorner The side views are a good place to start - so you get used to proportions and comparing which bits line up with each other. Be sure to have a look at the other films on drawing in perspective. Out of interest what sketchpad were you using and was that a black prismacolor?

    • @StefanMarjoram
      @StefanMarjoram 16 дней назад

      @@VesperAU It was a Prismacolor pencil and Bristol paper. I love the way the waxy pencil glides over the super smooth surface. You can get some nice dark tones and it won’t smudge - but it doesn’t erase well either, so best to work lightly at the beginning.

    This has always been one of my favourite cars, thank you. I would love to see any tips you have for very simple "flip book" sketched animation ?

      @StefanMarjoram 16 дней назад

      Oh blimey. Despite having had a long animation career, I’ve never done a flip book :) I started off doing drawn animation - but quickly realised just how amazingly time consuming it was - and turned to using computers, pixilation, models and anything else that would speed the process up a bit. I think if I was just starting to experiment with drawn animation now, I’d probably use Procreate or Fresco on the iPad.

      @@StefanMarjoram Thank you Stefan, yes I once thought I would draw the background history of an old old racer that lives in my garden, I thought it would be fun to do a comic strip story with the help of my young daughter, this was many years ago. We wrote the storyline and the started to do the final product. It was soo time consuming, we ended up with so much script ruthlessly chopped it barely makes a story! Great fun though.. The flip book idea came from a funny incident working on a customer’s Wolseley spl. I keep a workshop diary of every days work and I thought it would be fun to make a simple tiny animation of those laughable... and cryable incidents that occur working for customers! Many thanks for all you do here on you tube Bw

      @@ericohara2582 Those sound like some terrific ideas - you clearly have a writer/artist/director trying to get out :) perhaps each funny workshop episode could be distilled into a short strip - or even a single image? I’d like to read them. I also like the idea of telling the histories of old cars. There’s a lovely children’s book called Tin Lizzie which does just that :)
